When we mention Putrajaya, we Malaysians know that it is a well planned city that is our federal administrative centre and it is located about 25km south of Kuala Lumpur. And yet do you know that located next to Putrajaya, there is a little town named Dengkil?

Dengkil is a quaint little town (with a population of more than 2,000) situated in the Sepang district, in the southern part of Selangor state. This town though small, is teemed with life and the locals are very receptive to visitors or tourist. Dengkil is named after a species of plant called Nibong Dengkil which is found in abundance around this area. Some locals also said Dengkil originated from Dengkat which meant the shallow bed of the Langat River, and slowly it was evolved into Dengkil. Another version came from some of the locals who said that the word Dingkil means it is a durian fruit without its flesh. This version came about as there used to be a lot of durian trees planted in the area along the banks of the river. And at last, the name of Dingkil was changed to Dengkil.

Though a small town, Dengkil used to be flourishing area for tin mining and rubber plantation. However, when the industries slowed down, the business owners also moved out leaving behind mining pools and abandoned dredging machine. And now Dengkil embraces a new life in the agricultural industry – the oil palm plantations.

Nowadays, due to the rapid development of the areas around it, Dengkil has benefitted from this effect in terms of property prices. Dengkil now enjoys an atmosphere of comfort and tranquillity.

If you are heading from north, a 45 minute’s drive from Kuala Lumpur will take you to Dengkil. You have the choice of using the Lebuhraya Kuala Lumpur – Putrajaya or the Lebuhraya Damansara – Puchong or the Lebuhraya Utara Selation Hubungan Tengah.

There aren’t really much to do in this little except to stop for breakfast or lunch and quick browse at the temples. Mind you, there are seven temples in this small little town. The biggest and most famous one is the Heaven Lake Temple. This temple was built in 1926 and has more than 80 years of history. Every year, prayers and celebrations will be held in honour of the deity’s birthday. The locals will gather at the temple for prayers and also to enjoy the opera show held in front of the temple.

About 8km from Dengkil town, there is a “must visit” place named Paya Indah Wetlands.

Paya Indah Wetlands

About 8km from Dengkil town, there is a “must visit” place named Paya Indah Wetlands. It used to be an abandoned tin mining pool. The authorities has taken over this place and converted it into a premier eco-tourism park covering over approximately 3100 hectares.

The Paya Indah Wetlands is now the home to fish, lotus plants and water lilies. Not only that, there are also hippopotamuses soaking in the mud pools and if you are here at the feeding time (11am) you will be awed by the size of the hippo’s mouth. You will also encounter the world’s largest crocodiles. There is a surviving forest in the park where more than 200 species of birds, insects and animals have made their homes here. Every year, many birdwatchers will converge here to watch and photograph the birds and animals.

The park has also set up some chalets for nature camps and a research and development centre. Participants were given the chance to learn and to live with the natural surroundings.

The park offers interesting attractions and thrilling activities for people of all ages. Cycling trips are available for visitors to enjoy every nook and corner of the park at their own comfortable pace.

It is indeed an exciting place for day trips with family and friends.
