Lake Pukaki is the largest among three alpine lakes within the Mackenzie Basin in Canterbury Region of New Zealand’s South Island. What to do during winter?
During winter Lake Pukaki will not be frozen but its waters can dip to a low of 1.8 degree celsius. The landscape around Lake Pukaki will be transformed into powdery white vistas. Great for photography or just enjoying the white winter lands.
Activities would be more concentrated on the slopes of the mountain like skiing, snowboarding and etc.
How to get there?
One of the pleasures and highlights is driving to Lake Pukaki. Through its scenic drive way on the State Highway 8 through Lindis Pass connecting to State Highway 80 which takes you all the way to Mount Cook Village. It is a long, slightly windy road with many lookout points. Many travelers going through this pilgrimage have stopped and gotten lost in time just absorbing the sights and sound along the way.
No wonder “Middle Kingdom” has been brought down to earth on Mackenzie Basin.
