Kumamon was born in the year 2010 and a fellow resident of Kumamoto City on Kyushu Island, south of Japan. He is currently seven years old. It would be rather rude not to know Kumamon! Well let’s not hurt his feelings, so let’s get to know him better! He is a warm, fun loving bear who has widely traveled the world. Always with a ready trademark smile and red cheeks to welcome you to any part of the city of Kumamoto. Of course Kumamon is warm! It is also because he was born in one of the cities nestled within the simmering Mount. Aso, an active volcanic mountain. See! he cannot help being warm!

Kumamon is a very busy bear. Highly popular with many fans ranging from the very young to the very old. Of course his first fans are the residence of Kumamoto city. But don’t be surprised as Kumamon now has fans from all over the world. He teaches in Harvard, been to Bangkok, Singapore, to US, to the Eiffel tower and many more places. He is not only in local news but also in the international news arena like BBC, The Guardian, Wall Street Journal, Forbes and etc. He even roll with the royalties, he met Empress Michiko at her request!

So who is Kumamon? He is a mascot created by the government of Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. Created in conjunction for a tourism campaign as the Kyushu Shinkansen line opened in 2010. The rest as they say is history! Kumamon today is welcomed and celebrated throughout the world!
