FOR WALKERS, HIKERS AND NATURE LOVERS it is a must in making at least once a lifetime journey to Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. Cradle Mountain was declared a reserve as far back in 1922 owing to Austrian couple Gustav Weindorfers and his wife Kate. Today it shares a “Twin Park” agreement with the World Heritage listed Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve in the People’s Republic of China.

Winter: Snow poles mark the track descending from the summit of Cradle Mountain.

The 6th highest peak in Tasmania, Cradle Mountain has the best Bush Walking experience in Australia by its famously known Overland Track which is the route chartered by Gustav Weindorfers back in 1921. A magnificent yet intimate way to get to know Australia’s bush lands in this six days journey where it starts at Dove Lake, passing through Mt Ossa (Tasmania’s highest peak at 1617 meters) ending at Lake St. Clair. Walkers must be “experienced” enough as even walking in summer the weather can change from sunny to rain and sometimes with ice slates too. Walking through wild landscape, through ancient rainforests, alpine heathlands, buttongrass and stands of colourful deciduous beech trees as well as coming across icy streams to the still glacial lakes, not forgetting its resident fauna is an experienced worth the track. Hence equipping oneself mentally and physically is important.

An “Overland Track-Daily Walk Notes” can be downloaded in pdf form, info from The Parks and Wildlife Service of Tasmania. During summer which is the peak season from 1st October to 31st May, there is a fee to be paid. This goes a long way to conserve the park and its facilities. Giving back to the hikers and walkers welfare. No fee to be paid on the other seasons. The track is open all year round catering to different walkers and hikers experience.
