DEEP DIVE INTO KANCHANABURI.BANGKOK
THIS was to be unlike any other trip that I had in the past, to “my” beloved Bangkok. Boarding in Kuala Lumpur, and arriving approximately two hours later in the familiar voice of the air stewardess upon touchdown, “Welcome to Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok, Thailand” … has always been and still is music to my ears.
But this time round, instead of braving traffic to head to the heart of Bangkok, I start another leg of journey approximately two and a half hours by road to Kanchanaburi. Load less traveled, at least among fellow Malaysians, it is actually the 3rd biggest province in Thailand, with mountainous and hilly landscape filled with a rich history just waiting to be explored. One can easily lose track of time in this place, I began my journey at one of the most iconic sights here . . .

This iconic place is where the multiple awards 1957 movie got its name and fame from, “The Bridge on the River Kwai”. Despite the superb view and the majestic structure of the bridge built at that time, known also as “Death Railway” it was one of Thailand and Burma’s dark history during World War II, as written by Pierre Bouelle, his work adapted into a successful movie. Another iconic and special experience that you should do when you are here is roam the railway tracks, over 300 meters length of steel bridge. You can cross the bridge by foot on the central steel-plated walkway, stand in a safety point if a train appears.
Thai-Burma Death Railway
A must to experience at least once in your lifetime, board the Thai-Burma Death Railway and enjoy the scenic view. At the same time perhaps reflect on the rich history of the construction.
The bridge, is one of the few bridges which the “Thai-Burma Death Railway” passes through, which took 16 months construction between 1942 and 1943. The length of the railway stretches for 250 miles from Ban Pong, Thailand to Thanbuyuzayat, Burma. Experience one of the most authentic train-rides, where locals also board the train to commute between township and not only tourist. You might even be able to purchase from local Thai’s on-board the train! The journey of the train takes approximately an hour, and many visitors and bloggers have commented that upon reaching the last station, one would have to barter with a Tuk-Tuk driver to take you back or to any destination you are heading too. Before you board the train to experience beautiful scenes passing by from the window of the train, make a trip to JEATH War Museum, acquaint yourself with the history of the railway before your journey. The JEATH museum has an open air concept, and it is take care by monks of the adjacent Wat Chai Chumphon, the word JEATH is actually an acronym of Japan, England, Australia/USA, Thailand and Holland, the countries which was involved in the WWII during that time. After exploring JEATH Museum, you will know how Malaya’s history is also closely linked with the movie “The Bridge on the River Kwai”.

Have you ever watched the movie “The King and I”? Do you remember the little children dressed in these traditional Siamese outfits? Well here at Mallika Ancient Village, you can relieve the fond memories by wearing the traditional outfits of 1905 A.D and going about the daily life by using the local ancient currency of Satang.
An ancient currency called Satang instead of Thai Baht came into usage during the reign of King Chulalongkorn, Rama V (1873-1910 A.D) upon the abolition of slavery. Explore the beautiful landscape just as if you are back in time to ancient Siam, using only Satang to purchase items. Taking a picture at the Saphan Han Bridge is a must, as it was King Rama V changed it from a simple wooden bridge to the Venice’s Rialto or Florence’s Ponte Vecchio style which is a wide arch bridge with small shops on both sides, leaving the space in the middle for passersby. His Majesty loved visiting this bridge to buy imported dried fruits such as dried plum. There are many attractions within its walls, take time to explore.
Wat Than Sua
Tiger Cave Temple or to the locals as Wat Tham Sua, it is a temple dedicated to the Tigers. There was once tiger’s nestled at the foot of the limestone caverns, today the monks have dedicated a shrine housing the Tiger Spirit.

One of the most famous temples here, housing the largest Buddha image within Kanchanaburi area with an 18 meters in height. Either take your time to hike up the 157 steps or take a cable car up to its peak. A photographer’s delight up here, as there are vassals enshrining the ashes of revered Thai monks, and the view of Mae Khlong River.

Found along the Mae Klong River, the 50 kilometers long Amphawa floating night market is one of the cleanest floating markets found here in Bangkok or its surrounding area.
