The quaint Japanese city of Beppu in Oita Prefecture on the Southern Island of Kyushu is in-fact a well known spa resort city and home to an amazing 2,000 onsen or hot springs.

The thermals are heated with strength of a cluster of volcanic mountains, Tsurumi and Yufu domes are the two largest ones near the city of Beppu. When exploring the city, you will be met with a constant view of steam sprouting from every corner. It lends a warm pleasant atmosphere in winter but it can get quite hot and humid during summer!

Out of 2,000 onsen there are eight jigoku or hell ponds which are the most famous among tourists and highly recommended by the Beppu city council. Out of the eight, Chinoike Jigoku or Blood Hell and stands apart for its red colour hence giving it a more ominous feel of Hell with steam rising out of its red depth!

Boiling at 78 degree celcius, it is mentioned in earlier scripts as one of oldest (thought to be since 700 C.E) it has a history as a torture pool – boiling its victims to death. Today, its mineral gives healing instead! Chinoike ointment – red mud from its depth can be a balm for eczema, acne, hemorrhoids and etc. It’s well known use dating back to the Meiji era known as Blood ointment according to historical records.

Fans of Dragonball, the famed Chinoike Jigoku has also been included in one of the earlier episodes when Goku traveled to hell and fight with the “ONI” or japanese demon! The famed cartoonist Toriyama-san sure knows where to draw his inspiration!

So it is a must for a visit if one is ever traveling to the Spa Resort town of Beppu in Oita prefecture.
