Otaru Canal

Otaru Canal located in the port town on the coast of the Sea of Japan in northern Shiribeshi Subprefecture. Famously known as the Venice of the East, was actually built in the early 1920’s as one of the main shipping ports supporting the local industry. As modern times approached, a new port catering to the larger vessels has been built allowing direct off-loading and the Otaru Canal slowly ceased it’s place and lustre. Instead of abandoning it, the city has preserved its legacy and warehouses turning it into a dreamy romantic escape while walking back in time.

Possible the most romantic place one can bring a lover for an exclusive dinner in one of those refurbished warehouses turned restaurant. After dinner stroll along the canal, where the snow covered walkways are lighted with soft orange lights emitted from the old fashioned street lamps. How to get there: Take the JR Chitose Line, Hakodate Express from the new Chitose Airport Station to Otaru Station for about 1 hour and 11 minutes.

How to get there:
1. Take the JR Yamagata Shinkansen from Tokyo to Oishida Station (four stops north of Yamagata Station).
2. From there, buses depart for Ginzan Onsen every 60-90 minutes. The bus rides takes approximately 40 minutes.

1. Late April to mid November, there are multiple direct buses per hour between Hakodate Station and the summit of Mount Hakodate in the evenings (30 minutes).
2. If you are taking the tram, stop at Jujigai tram stop (5 minutes from Hakodate Station) 10 Minutes walk to the Mt. Hakodate Ropeway station.
3. Take the Mt. Hakodate Ropeway 3 minutes to the top.
